You read that right. I FOUND A KITTEN!!!!
The literal last thing I needed was another furry friend- but the Universe had something else in mind for my little family.
A typical work week morning for me looks like the following: Wake up around 3:30-3:45 AM, get dressed for the day, brush teeth, put on a touch of makeup, boil water for my coffee, boil water for my cacao + mushroom drink, pack my lunch, smooch the hubs and the pets, and then leave for the day around 4-4:15 AM. This past Friday looked very normal for me as I got into the car at around 4:15 in the morning. I noticed that my favorite tarot reader on Youtube (Baba Jolie) had uploaded a new bonus reading for Pisces, so I popped that on and began the commute to the city!
I was only about 3-4 minutes into my drive- I hadn’t even made it out of the neighborhood before I saw two tiny green glowing eyes on the side of the road. To give you some background I am someone who will ALWAYS stop to help an animal. Typically when I do, though, it will run away and is much quicker than I am. I pulled over and put my hazards on, walked over to the side of the road, and squatted down saying “c’mere little kitty!”. Well. it did. I was not expecting that at all, so I scooped it up and put it in the passenger seat. Never thinking I would get this far I had absolutely no idea what to do next! I have space to put it in until I can contact animal control and the humane society, so I decided to bring the kitten home and quarantine it in my office, AKA the cat room.
I called my boss to let her know what was going on and that I would be a little bit behind schedule and swiftly placed the kitten in my office with food and fresh water. None of our animals seemed to notice but I couldn’t keep this from my husband who has been sleeping this entire time. So, like any good wife would do, I woke him up to let him know that I found a little baby kitten and that they would be in the office until I could get home and figure out next steps. In his grogginess he replied, “you’re bringing it in the house?!”. YUP! Sorry!! Baby kitten was settled and it was time to get to work.
After being settled at work I made a post to our neighborhood app asking if anyone was missing this kitten, called the vet to schedule a time to scan for a microchip and see if anyone reported a missing kitten, called animal control, AND emailed the humane society. Nobody has reported their kitten being missing. After work my husband and I took the kitten to the vet to scan for a microchip and find out if it was a boy or girl. No such luck with the chip, but we did find out we had a little lady! After some discussion my husband and I decided that since we do have the means to take care of her, we would be letting her stay with us indefinitely.
That said- Let me go ahead and introduce you to Freya! The newest member of the family!

We landed on Freya because my husband wanted to name her after the goddess of the full moon from the video game he has been playing. I’m not really particularly into a lot of video games so I asked if he would be willing to compromise with a norse goddess, which he was. I also found it a bit funny that Friday is Freya’s day- which is the day I found her!
On Saturday I took her in for her shots and blood work after a very difficult morning. We had a tornado touch down in the town directly next to ours- making my storm anxiety go through the roof. Not relevant, but thought it would be fun to add into the story. She was very sweet, however simultaneously an absolute terror. They had to muzzle and blind her to be able to finish the vaccines. But that is over with, she has a clean bill of health, and now we wait for her spay appointment in a few weeks!
In the meantime are currently working on slow introductions to the boys as well as the house. She is very excited to explore but we want to make sure we keep a close eye on her until she has the lay of the land. Our boys are very mild tempered and we’ve only had very brief hissing, other than that they seem pretty apathetic to her presence. Introductions with the dogs were not so great, but that will come with time.
I never thought I would be getting another pet to add to the family, and we are most certainly over max capacity, but I am happy we were able to bring Freya into our home. I genuinely think we may have saved her life. The day we brought her home it was 92 degrees out and we are in a minor drought, the following morning we had severe thunderstorms and a brief tornado. I don’t think a kitten is equipped to handle such extremes. Whatever reason she was brought into our lives, I am happy we can give her the best life we possibly can!
Until next time,
-Sophia
